What was the inspiration behind this story?

Author: I had long been intrigued by the remarkable leadership qualities of Major James Newman, the commander of Charlie Troop, who was a legend because in combat he would never leave anyone behind. As a war correspondent for The Associated Press, I covered Newman and his air cavalry troop during the most intensive helicopter combat ever (although I didn’t realize that at the time). Newman pulled off astounding rescues under withering enemy fire to get his people—and others—out of trouble after they got shot down. When he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery six years ago, I learned that the commander who would never leave anyone behind came home from the war, walked out on his wife and left two teenage sons behind—and never spoke to those boys again for the rest of his life. I set out to reconcile the dichotomy of what I came to think of as “the two Jim Newmans.”
